The Messerschmitt Bf 109 monoplane fighter is, without a doubt, one of the most famous fighter aircraft of the Second World War and can be considered one of the symbols of the Luftwaffe. Throughout the conflict, it was regularly upgraded in terms of engines and armament in an effort to remain competitive against more modern aircraft with superior flight performance. Together with the Focke-Wulf Fw 190, it formed the backbone of the Luftwaffe’s fighter units. The most renowned German aces flew the Bf 109, achieving a significant number of aerial victories. Among them we can recall the pilots of the famous Jagdgeschwader 52 and the ace with the highest number of kills of the Second World War: Erich Hartmann.
