The AV-8B Harrier II multirole attack and close air support aircraft was born from the collaboration between British and American aeronautical industries. It represents a significant evolution compared to the first short takeoff and vertical landing (V/STOL) aircraft of the Harrier family. The AV-8B was developed and implemented to operate from aircraft carriers without catapults and from amphibious assault ships, as well as from improvised landing strips. Thanks to these characteristics, it has been widely employed by the United States Marine Corps, including in operational contexts. Capable of carrying an offensive payload consisting of air-to-air missiles, guided bombs, and air-to-surface missiles, the AV-8B is characterized by considerable operational flexibility and the ability to perform numerous types of missions.
